KEVIN WILEN Favorite Fruit: The pineapple may be considered the king of fruits, but make no mistake, the grape is truly a God among stems. Like that bear Daddy you met during a regretful Folsom weekend, the grape has a leathery outside protecting a soft yet juicy interior. They can be sweet, tart or even bitter. Dried in the sun they will transform into a sophisticated raisin adding a satisfying burst of zest to any salad or pudding flavor. However, the greatest gift the grape can bring is that of life-giving wine. Whether you are sipping on a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon after a hard days work, nursing on champagne to cure a Sunday brunch hangover, or chugging a bottle of Pinot after a tragic breakup that results in you crashing a brand new Porsche into the oldest, most-beloved elm tree on Main Street; wine is always there for you. Like an animal companion but better. Wine never needs to go for a walk, and will never eat your expensive cashmere socks. You can look it dead in the eye and scream “I love you wine!” and it won’t ever call you back. But you knew that. And you adore that. How one could even consider another fruit is preposterous, even insulting to my cluster-forming beautiful grape friends. LINDA LAY Favorite Fruit: My favorite fruit is the persimmon because it is also known as the wheat of Zeus, who is the father of gods and men. I like to eat persimmons when they are ripe. Me & FruitFlyLife: Readers should expect some sweet illustrations that investigate the human condition and the duality of man.
