Berlin. Nightlife. Those two words that live in rebellious infamy. Dungeons, bass lines, sex swings, strangers…the unassuming freedom that comes from a city re-appropriated.
Enter Desire Will Set You Free, the latest exploration of subculture by William S. Burroughs: A Man Within director, Yony Leyser. His fiction debut, the film captures “Berlin’s multifaceted underground.” Fitted with the flare of a 1000 drag queens, Desire traverses a world often left to imagination and mystique without disrupting the delicate balance between secret and acceptance of definitive Berlin.
As described by Yony, “Desire portrays artistic and marginalized life in contemporary Berlin with an often critical, and sometimes humorous (but never mocking) eye. The story follows the encounter between an American writer from Israeli/Palestinian descent and a Russian aspiring artist working as a hustler. Actively exploring gender identify, sexuality, and the differences between expatriate and refugee life, the main characters travel through Berlin’s layered history and unique subcultural landscape. On their adventures they discover influences and remnants of the Weimar Republic, WWII, the Bowie years, and punk.”

Desire stars greats and near-greats Nina Hagen, electro star Peaches, Brooklyn’s Blood Orange, German sensation Rummelsnuff, rapper Sookee, Einstürzende Neubauten’s Jochen Arbeit and Wolfgang Müller, plus cast members Amber Benson (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame), German film legend Rosa Von Praunheim, artists Eva & Adele, photographer Miron Zownir, as well as newcomers Tim-Fabian Hoffman and Chloe Griffin, in addition to director Yony Leyser. Cult roster orgasm at its finest.
Filming has wrapped and Desire is aiming for a 2015 theatrical release. In the meantime, Yony and his merry band of Berlin transients are asking for help with editing costs via Kickstarter. With a mere 5 days left on the campaign, backers will receive gifts including a (tongue optional) kiss from the director, an executive producer credit, and 2 tickets to the world premiere in Berlin.
So think twice about buying that 8-ball this weekend and instead use that money to support Desire Will Set You Free.
